Where it came from
Tokyo 2164 is a standalone original net animation (ONA) project that emerged from the independent Japanese digital art scene during the early 2000s. Created as a short-form speculative piece, it sought to explore the aesthetics of high-concept cyberpunk within the constraints of early internet-era animation distribution. The project was primarily an experimental exercise in world-building, focusing on minimalist character designs and a stark, neon-drenched visual language that contrasted with the more mainstream aesthetic trends of television anime at the time.
The production relied on a small team of digital artists who aimed to push the limits of software-based rendering for web-based playback. While it did not receive a widespread theatrical or broadcast release, the ONA gained a dedicated following among enthusiasts of experimental sci-fi, who valued its thematic focus on urban isolation and futuristic dystopia. It remains a notable example of the grassroots creative spirit that defined the nascent era of digital-native independent animation.
