Naoki Kuzumi, a junior in high school, had lost his parents in an accident five years ago, and is living with his aunt, uncle, and cousin Matsuri. He always thought his life was ordinary, besides the fact that he can't remember what happened in his youth. One sunny day as he is taking a nap on a bench, a redheaded girl -- Mikoto -- literally falls on him from the sky. For some reason, she thinks he's her younger brother. Naoki's time period is a temporal shelter for those in the future, when many are suffering from an incurable disease. When she heard her younger brother Yuusuke had been taken to Naoki's time, Mikoto herself had gone back in time.

Where it came from
Tsuki wa Higashi ni Hi wa Nishi ni: Operation Sanctuary originated as an adult visual novel developed by August in 2003, quickly finding success for its slice-of-life narrative and character-driven plot. In 2004, the studio Radix Ace Entertainment adapted the title into a television series, aiming to capture the game's gentle, small-town atmosphere and its focus on the burgeoning relationships between high school students in a rural setting.
The character designs for the animation were handled by Hiroki Harada, who sought to translate the soft aesthetic of the original game into the medium of television. While the adaptation was received as a straightforward representation of the source material, it is primarily remembered by fans of the era as a quintessential example of mid-2000s lighthearted romance anime, reflecting the period's trend of adapting popular visual novels for a broader audience.
