Where it came from
Tsuruhime Ja! was released in 1990 as a television special produced by the renowned animation studio Madhouse. It serves as an adaptation of the popular manga series created by Ryoichi Ikegami, which blends historical reimagining with character-driven comedy. The production was intended to showcase the studio's ability to balance intricate period aesthetics with the dynamic, expressive character animation that defined the late 1980s and early 1990s anime landscape.
The creative direction focused on translating Ikegami's distinct visual style into a fluid, animated format, emphasizing the protagonist's spirited personality against the backdrop of feudal Japan. Upon its release, the special was received as a stylish, albeit niche, entry in the historical fiction genre, appreciated by fans of the original source material for its faithful tonal interpretation and high production values.
