Where it came from
Tsurune originated as a light novel series written by Kotoko Ayano and illustrated by Chinatsu Morimoto, which won a Judge’s Special Award at the Kyoto Animation Awards in 2016. The studio adapted the source material into a television anime series in 2018, directed by Takuya Yamamura. The narrative centers on Minato Narumiya, a high school student navigating the disciplined world of Japanese archery, known as kyudo, while overcoming a psychological block.
The production is notable for Kyoto Animation's signature dedication to atmospheric detail and fluid character animation. The team conducted extensive research into the mechanics of kyudo to ensure that the movements, the tension of the bowstrings, and the sound design—from which the title is derived—were represented with authenticity. Upon its release, the series was praised for its introspective storytelling and meticulous visual aesthetic, establishing a distinct identity within the studio's broader catalog of coming-of-age dramas.
