Synopsis

Twelve Months is the story of an orphaned girl named Anya. When a spoiled princess, who is also orphaned, sees a picture of a Galanthus, she immediately wants one. However, the Galanthus only blooms in spring, in the month of April. It is New Year's Eve and there was no way that such a flower can be found in the middle of the winter. The princess offers a basket of gold to anyone who can bring her a bag of Galanthus.

Provenance

Where it came from

Twelve Months, released in 1980, is an animated feature film produced by Toei Animation in collaboration with the Soviet studio Soyuzmultfilm. The project served as a creative bridge between Japanese animation techniques and the classic Slavic folktale, which was famously adapted by Samuil Marshak. The film sought to bring a cinematic, storybook aesthetic to the screen, focusing on themes of nature, persistence, and the seasons, reflecting the collaborative spirit of international cultural exchange during the late Cold War era.

The film was directed by Kimio Yabuki, a veteran of Toei, who worked to balance the rigid, painterly style of traditional Eastern European animation with the fluid motion typical of Toei’s Golden Age. Upon its release, it was recognized for its melancholic atmosphere and its ambitious orchestral score. While it remains a niche entry in the global catalogue of Toei Animation, it is held in high regard by enthusiasts of international co-productions for its preservation of a distinct, folk-inspired visual language that differed significantly from the standard shonen or mecha titles dominating the studio's output at the time.
