From the beginning of time, Earth has been enslaved by the powerful and grotesque Ogres. The dominance these arrogant immortals hold over the helpless victims is challenged only by the noble Guardians.
Eons later, in the year 2089, few Ogres of Guardians remain in Neo-Shinjuku. Humans rule the Earth; yet, deep within the dark underworld of the city, the supreme Ogre is still alive and is preparing, once again, to enslave the Human race.

Where it came from
Twilight of the Dark Master was produced by the legendary studio Madhouse and released as an original video animation in 1998. It emerged during a prolific era for the studio, adapted from the manga series by Satoru Yuiga. The narrative operates within the dark fantasy and science fiction genres, depicting an urban landscape where supernatural entities and futuristic technology collide, reflecting the aesthetic sensibilities of late 1990s Japanese animation that favored grim, atmospheric storytelling.
The production was directed by Akiyuki Shinbo, a filmmaker who would later become renowned for his highly stylized and unconventional visual direction. In this early project, Shinbo leaned into the bleak, cyberpunk-inspired visual language typical of the period's OVA market. While the work received a limited reception upon its international release in the early 2000s, it is often examined by scholars and fans for its early examples of the directorial flair and experimental framing that would characterize Shinbo's more famous later works.
