Where it came from
Twin Angels BREAK, released in 2017, serves as the third television anime adaptation of the long-running Twin Angel franchise. Produced by J.C.Staff, the series follows the magical girl tradition established by the earlier OVA and television entries, which originated from a popular series of pachislot machines by Sammy. The production aimed to refresh the franchise by introducing new protagonists, Umiko and Meguru, while maintaining the upbeat, transformation-heavy aesthetic that fans of the magical girl subgenre associate with the series.
The character designs for the series were handled by Masahiro Mukai, who also directed the project, aiming for a vibrant and accessible look that leaned into the colorful tropes of the genre. Upon its release, the series was received as a lighthearted expansion of the franchise’s universe, catering primarily to established followers of the Twin Angel mythos. Its visual style is characterized by J.C.Staff’s clean, polished animation, reflecting the high production standards expected of modern mahou shoujo titles developed for the late-night broadcast market.
