Uchuu Bouei-tai Taabou no Shinkirou Sei wo Sukue!

Uchuu Bouei-tai Taabou no Shinkirou Sei wo Sukue! is an original video animation released in 1987 as a tie-in to the popular Japanese television series Taabou. The production emerged during the height of the eighties OVA market, a period characterized by studios producing direct-to-home-video installments that allowed for experimental storytelling or expanded narratives outside the constraints of weekly broadcast television. This specific entry serves as a standalone adventure featuring the titular character Taabou, a cheerful, saucer-headed boy whose simplistic, round aesthetic was inspired by the character design style of Sanrio’s Minna no Taabou.

The animation was produced to extend the reach of the franchise beyond standard merchandise and television sketches, aiming to engage younger audiences with a longer-form narrative. The aesthetic is heavily reflective of the late昭和 era of Japanese animation, utilizing clean, bright character lines and a straightforward, optimistic tone typical of family-oriented media from that decade. While it was not a revolutionary work in terms of animation techniques, it remains a notable artifact of the era's tendency to utilize OVAs as a reliable method for maintaining brand presence in the domestic Japanese video market.
