Where it came from
Released in 1996, Ultraman: Chou Toushi Gekiden - Suisei Senjin Tsuifon Toujou serves as an entry in the Chou Toushi Gekiden series, a unique departure for the Ultra franchise that reimagined classic Ultraman characters as armored combatants in a high-fantasy, tournament-style setting. This OVA was produced by Bandai Visual during a period when the company was experimenting with shifting the tone of its iconic tokusatsu properties to appeal to a demographic interested in martial arts manga and role-playing game aesthetics.
The character designs for this iteration were heavily influenced by the 'Super Battle' aesthetic, emphasizing intricate metallic armor and weaponized gear rather than the traditional rubber-suit appearance. While the departure from established canon was bold, the series found a dedicated audience among followers of 1990s anime tropes, standing today as a distinct curiosity that highlights the versatility and adaptability of the Ultraman brand in the mid-nineties animation landscape.
