Where it came from
Umacha was produced by Studio Ghibli in 2001 as a limited-edition promotional tie-in, specifically released to coincide with the theatrical debut of Hayao Miyazaki's masterpiece, Spirited Away. The name itself is a portmanteau derived from the Japanese words for sea and tea, reflecting the film's thematic resonance with nature and the traditional aesthetics often championed by the studio's internal production culture.
The design of the packaging and associated promotional materials draws heavily upon the character silhouettes and color palettes established by the film's art department. While it was never intended for wide commercial retail, its release was curated to evoke the same sense of nostalgic wonder that defined the studio's early 2000s output, earning it a modest but dedicated following among Ghibli completionists who appreciate the intersection of animation history and limited-run corporate branding.
