Where it came from
UMAYON, a series of short-form animated episodes released in 2020 by W-Toon Studio, was produced as a spin-off to the popular multimedia franchise Uma Musume Pretty Derby. The project was created to provide a lighthearted, comedic accompaniment to the main narrative, utilizing a stylized, chibi-inspired aesthetic to depict the daily lives and eccentricities of the horse girls in a more casual, gag-based format.
The animation style and design choices were intended to emphasize humor and character chemistry rather than the high-stakes racing drama found in the primary television series. By focusing on rapid-fire jokes and whimsical situations, W-Toon Studio aimed to deepen audience engagement with the characters. Upon its release, it was well-received by the existing fan base for its ability to balance the intense lore of the franchise with accessible, bite-sized entertainment.
