Where it came from
Released in 2007 by Walt Disney Pictures, the live-action adaptation of the classic animated series Underdog was designed to modernize the beloved canine hero for a new generation of film audiences. The project emerged from a trend of reviving mid-century intellectual properties, aiming to blend the nostalgic charm of the original 1964 television show with contemporary computer-generated imagery and a comedic tone suited for family viewers.
The film was directed by Frederik Du Chau and featured the voice talents of Jason Lee, with the titular beagle portrayed by a real-life dog named Leo. While the production team sought to pay homage to the comic book roots of the character, the film faced a lukewarm reception from critics who noted a significant tonal shift from the original cartoon. Despite mixed reviews, the project remains a notable example of the mid-2000s era of hybrid live-action and CGI family cinema.
