Where it came from
Future Police Urashiman was produced by Tatsunoko Production and aired in Japan throughout 1983. The series serves as a loose, sci-fi reimagining of the Japanese folktale Urashima Tarō, transposing the narrative of a man displaced in time into a futuristic, neon-drenched metropolis known as Neo-Tokyo. This transition reflected the era's fascination with cyberpunk aesthetics and urban dystopias, blending high-energy action sequences with character-driven drama.
The series is noted for its distinctive visual style, which moved away from traditional mecha-heavy tropes toward a more character-focused narrative. Under the creative influence of Tatsunoko's house style, the design prioritized kinetic movement and stylistic experimentation. While it maintained a cult following for its bold animation and synth-heavy soundtrack, its influence was most significantly felt in the development of subsequent gritty, urban-themed anime during the mid-1980s.
