Synopsis

Urashima Taro is based on a well-known Japanese folk tale about an honest fisherman who is invited to an underwater castle after saving a sea turtle on a beach from bullies.

Based on its content and the circumstances prevailing at the time of its discovery, [this] film was presumed to be a work produced by Kitayama at the film studio of Nippon Katsudo Shashin Corporation (Nikkatsu) in 1918. Recently, however, stills from the film Urashima Taro released by Nikkatsu in 1918 have been discovered in a magazine. These stills do not appear in [this] film, so we are led to believe that this film is not the work produced by Kitayama at the Nikkatsu studio.

Provenance

Where it came from

The animated project centered on the classic Japanese folktale Urashima Tarou, produced by D&C Media, represents an attempt to modernize a foundational piece of folklore for a contemporary audience. Created within the competitive landscape of animation studios, this adaptation seeks to balance the traditional narrative of the fisherman who visits a dragon palace under the sea with the visual aesthetics expected in modern digital production.

The design philosophy behind the film focuses on translating the themes of time, isolation, and transformation into a cohesive visual language. By utilizing the specific art style associated with D&C Media, the directors aimed to distinguish this version from the myriad of historic theatrical and television adaptations that preceded it. Critical and public reception has generally analyzed the work through the lens of how effectively it reconciles the somber tone of the original legend with the demands of modern feature-length storytelling.
