Urashima Tarou (1931)

Urashima Tarou, released in 1931, is a significant example of early Japanese animation, emerging during a formative period for the medium. It adapts the classic Japanese folktale of a fisherman who rescues a turtle and is rewarded with a visit to the underwater Palace of the Dragon God, only to return to his village to find that centuries have passed. Produced as a short film, it reflects the era's interest in integrating traditional folklore into the emerging cinematic language of the Taisho and early Showa periods.

The film was created by the animator Jiro Osada, who utilized paper cutout animation techniques common to the time. His approach sought to evoke the aesthetic of traditional Japanese emaki picture scrolls, blending static, stylized illustrations with fluid movement. While the film was not a major commercial blockbuster, it was well-regarded among contemporary critics for its artistic merit and its contribution to the nascent Japanese animation industry, which was then heavily experimenting with storytelling methods suited for short-form visual media.
