Utawarerumono: The False Faces Specials

Utawarerumono: The False Faces Specials were produced by studio WHITE FOX as a companion to the 2015 television anime adaptation of the second entry in the Utawarerumono tactical role-playing game series. Released in 2016, these shorts were designed to expand upon the world-building of the Yamato Empire while providing comedic relief that contrasted with the more serious, politically driven tone of the primary narrative. The production team utilized the same creative staff as the series to ensure stylistic continuity, aiming to deepen the audience's emotional connection to the core cast.

The specials were integrated into the home video release strategy, a common practice in the industry during this period to add value to collector sets. By focusing on lighthearted vignettes and character-driven scenarios, the design intent was to explore the domestic lives of characters like Haku and Kuon, which were often sidelined during the main series’ dramatic arcs. They were generally well-received by fans of the franchise, serving as a nostalgic supplement that rounded out the viewing experience of the second installment.
