Due to the destruction of nature, the disruption of ecosystem, and also massive wars using nuclear bombs and biological weapons since 20 centuries, the earth fell into ruins. The ground was collapsed and polluted, and many kinds of plants and animals became extinct. The earth encountered the 6th mass extinction: The Big Six. During the time, humans built the aero police to save endangered species. In this isolated city in the sky, various animals evolved over the years through genetically modified mating. As a result, they started walking on two legs and acquired language. Today, they have built a civilization and lead peaceful lives. No one thinks of the outside, the terrestrial world any more―― One day, kids on the aero police find an unknown seed from the outside. And their adventure in the unseen terrestrial world starts! ――Without knowing that once they go down to the ground, they will never be able to come back…

Where it came from
Utopa is a short film released in 2016 by Studio 4°C, created as part of the Japan Animator Expo, a project spearheaded by Hideaki Anno’s Studio Khara and Dwango. The project was designed to showcase the creative breadth of various animation studios, granting creators total artistic freedom to experiment with non-traditional narratives and visual styles. This specific short was produced as a collaborative effort to push the boundaries of digital animation techniques while providing a platform for emerging talent within the industry.
The visual direction for the short was helmed by director Hiroki Taniguchi, who utilized the studio’s signature bold, abstract aesthetic to explore themes of environmental collapse and surrealist world-building. Eschewing a conventional linear plot, the work focuses on atmospheric storytelling and kinetic energy. Upon its release, it was lauded by critics and enthusiasts for its high production value and its willingness to prioritize experimental motion and stylized character design over standard broadcast tropes.
