Utsukushii

Utsukushii, published in 1987 by the esteemed Japanese photography house Parco Shuppan, represents a significant moment in late-twentieth-century visual art. This photobook features the work of renowned photographer Kishin Shinoyama, who was commissioned to document the singer and actress Seiko Matsuda during the height of her cultural dominance in Japan. The project was designed to capture a more mature, evocative aesthetic for the performer, distancing her from the typical idol persona of the era.

The book is celebrated for its high-production values and artistic restraint, reflecting Shinoyama’s signature ability to blend candid realism with cinematic composition. Critics at the time noted the work for its sophisticated use of light and shadow, which effectively elevated the status of celebrity photography in Japan to a fine art medium. It remains a definitive artifact of the Japanese bubble economy era, showcasing a unique collaboration between one of the nation's most prolific photographers and one of its most iconic pop-culture figures.
