Versailles no Bara: Moetsukita Bara no Shouzou

Versailles no Bara: Moetsukita Bara no Shouzou was released in 1980 as a compilation film following the conclusion of the influential television anime series based on Riyoko Ikeda's manga. Produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha, this special served to condense the sprawling narrative of the French Revolution as experienced by Oscar François de Jarjayes into a singular cinematic experience. It emerged during a period when the studio sought to capitalize on the profound cultural impact of the series, which had redefined the shōjo genre by blending historical drama with complex character-driven storytelling.

The visual direction and character designs aimed to preserve the sweeping, romantic aesthetic established by Shingo Araki and Michi Himeno, whose work on the series is celebrated for its elegance and dramatic flair. The compilation was received as a poignant epilogue for fans, providing a thematic distillation of the original production's central themes of sacrifice, duty, and tragic heroism. While it functions primarily as a condensed retelling, it remains a notable artifact of the franchise's peak influence in late 1970s and early 1980s Japanese animation.
