Where it came from
Versailles no Bara: Seimei Aru Kagiri Aishite, also known as The Rose of Versailles: I'll Love You as Long as I Live, was released in 1987 as a compilation film summarizing the iconic 1979 anime series. Produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha, the project was designed to distill the sweeping, tragic narrative of Riyoko Ikeda’s original manga, which follows the life of Oscar François de Jarjayes amidst the mounting tensions of the French Revolution. It serves as a visual testament to the studio's adaptation, capturing the dramatic flair and historical romance that defined the series.
The animation style is heavily influenced by the character designs of Shingo Araki and Michi Himeno, who are celebrated for their elegant, flowing lines and expressive, jewel-like eyes. Their work on this franchise helped solidify the 'shojo' aesthetic of the 1970s and 80s, prioritizing emotional resonance and melodrama. While the film functioned primarily as a condensed retrospective for established fans, it is regarded as a significant artifact of the classic era of Tokyo Movie Shinsha's prestige animation, maintaining the series' reputation for high-quality period drama.
