Emily has had a crush on Hasegawa for quite some time. A fellow resident of her building, Hasegawa has always been there for her as a friend, though she would like something more than friendship. When Hasegawa starts confiding his woman troubles to Emily, she introduces him to Virtuacall, a service that lets you interact with the girl of your dreams just as you wish you could. Unfortunately, Hasegawa becomes more interested in Virtuacall than her as a result. On the verge of leaving the country for her homeland, Emily is so overcome by emotion that she can neither tell Hasegawa about her feeling or tell him that she is leaving.

Where it came from
Released in 1997 by SoftCel Pictures, Virtuacall emerged during the height of the 1990s direct-to-video anime boom, a period defined by the rapid localization of adult-oriented animated works for Western audiences. The production was part of a specific wave of titles aimed at capitalizing on the growing fascination with cyber-culture and virtual reality, themes that were culturally ubiquitous following the emergence of the commercial internet.
As an original video animation (OVA) project, Virtuacall followed the standard conventions of the era, utilizing a straightforward narrative structure to showcase the character designs and animation styles popular with genre fans of the time. While the production is representative of the niche catalog SoftCel Pictures curated for the home video market, it remains a modest artifact of an era when specialized independent studios prioritized the quick translation and distribution of Japanese animation for an eager, emerging domestic fan base.
