Where it came from
Virtualsan-Looking was produced by Dwango in 2019 as an experimental variety series centered on the burgeoning VTuber culture. It was conceived as a showcase for various popular virtual YouTubers of the era, placing them in improvised sketches and comedic segments to bridge the gap between niche internet performance art and traditional television formats.
The series was directed by Hiroshi Hatanaka and featured a distinct, modular visual style intended to accommodate the differing technical specifications of the various virtual avatars involved. Despite its ambitious aim to mainstream the VTuber phenomenon, the show received mixed critical reception, with many viewers finding the surreal, fast-paced humor and the technical constraints of the collaborative format to be challenging for a general audience.
