Where it came from
Waixingren Shi Riji, or The Alien’s Diary, was produced by the Chinese studio Observatory Animation as an original net animation. Released within the growing landscape of independent Chinese web series, the project sought to explore themes of isolation and observation through a minimalist, atmospheric lens. It stands as a testament to the studio's focus on stylized storytelling, prioritizing visual mood and pacing over traditional, dialogue-heavy narrative structures.
The aesthetic design reflects a deliberate choice to emphasize the alien's perspective, utilizing a restrained color palette and stark compositions to evoke a sense of detachment. Critics and viewers within the animation community noted the work for its experimental approach to world-building, often comparing its contemplative tone to classic science fiction shorts. While it remains a niche entry in the studio's portfolio, it is frequently cited by enthusiasts of modern Chinese digital animation for its stylistic coherence.
