Provenance

Where it came from

Wakakusa no Charlotte, or Charlotte of the Young Grass, was produced by Nippon Animation in 1977 as part of the studio's long-running efforts to adapt classic Western literature and narratives into serialized anime. Directed by Eiji Okabe, the series draws inspiration from the sentimental storytelling traditions that characterized the studio's World Masterpiece Theater era, focusing on the emotional development of a young girl navigating the challenges of rural life after relocating from Canada to France.

The character designs were handled by the prolific animator Ippei Kuri and his team at Tatsunoko Production, who sought to imbue the protagonist with a sense of resilience and innocence consistent with the era's character-driven dramas. While the series did not reach the global ubiquity of later works like Heidi or Anne of Green Gables, it remains a distinct example of 1970s character design, noted for its melancholic atmosphere and its earnest attempt to balance domestic hardship with a coming-of-age journey.
