Murasaki Wakako is a 26-year-old OL that loves nothing more than delicious food and drink. Wakako's favorite thing to do for relaxation is to go off by herself after work and go to various places to eat and drink, even if she's never been there before. The moment Wakako is able to taste the pairing between the food she wants to eat and the perfect accompanying drink, the happy sound of "Pshuuu" leaves her lips. Now, then. Where shall we drink tonight?

Where it came from
Wakakozake began as a manga series by Chie Shinkyu, serializing in Comic Zenon starting in 2011 before being adapted into a live-action television series by studio office DCI in 2015. The work was conceived as a slice-of-life exploration of solo dining and drinking culture, focusing on the simple, solitary joy of pairing specific dishes with alcoholic beverages. It emerged during a period of rising interest in introspective, low-stakes narratives that highlight urban culinary experiences.
The television adaptation was designed to mirror the rhythmic, observational quality of the original manga, relying on a minimalist narrative structure that prioritizes the sensory details of the food and drink. Directed by Shinji Kuma, the series was received as a gentle, atmospheric look at the protagonist's evening routine, praised for its focus on mindfulness and the normalization of dining alone in Japanese urban settings.
