The story centers around Takahiro Mizuno, a student training to be a begleiter (knight's assistant) at an academy where aspiring knights joust. He himself had come to this academy to train as a knight, after becoming the unrivaled junior champion in his own home country. However, an injury in a tournament's finals forced him to withdraw. Instead, he decides to be a begleiter to one of the academy's maiden knights and help her win.

Where it came from
Walkure Romanze was produced by the studio Ricca and released in 2013 as a television anime adaptation of a visual novel developed by the adult game company Ricotta. The series centers on the sport of jousting within a fictional academy setting, drawing inspiration from the visual novel's established premise of a protagonist serving as a knight's squire. The production was aimed at fans of the romance and sports subgenres, attempting to blend competitive tournament stakes with the character-focused dynamics common to the medium at the time.
The aesthetic and character designs were adapted for animation to maintain the distinct visual style of the source material's character artists. As a niche production, it was designed primarily to serve the existing audience of the original visual novel, resulting in a reception that remained largely confined to established circles of anime and visual novel enthusiasts. It is often cited in discussions regarding the broader landscape of 2010s light novel and game-to-anime adaptations.
