The gateway to Idol stardom might have opened for the newly formed singing group Wake Up, Girls, but the path to fame is full of perils and pitfalls. And for Mayu, Airi, Minami, Yoshino, Nanami, Kaya and Miyu, it's going to be especially difficult knowing who to trust, as their manager Matsuda's lack of experience could give other, less scrupulous, individuals a chance to take advantage.
That's a situation that quickly comes to a head when Green Leaves' president suddenly disappears with most of the money, and things only get worse when the replacement producer seems more interested in getting the girls into revealing swimsuits than promoting their music.
As malicious gossip begins to surface regarding Mayu's past membership in a rival group, and internal tensions begin to tear the team apart, they'll need more than just ambition to survive. Singing may be a business, but friendship and a love of music is what will keep everything together.

Where it came from
Wake Up, Girls! premiered in early 2014 as a multimedia project involving a television series and a companion film, produced by Studio Ordet and Tatsunoko Production. Conceived by director Yutaka Yamamoto, the project was intended as a grounded, realistic look at the idol industry, focusing on a group of struggling performers based in Sendai, Japan. The narrative sought to depart from the glossy, idealized portrayals common in the genre by highlighting the financial and logistical hardships faced by regional talent.
The series is noted for its ambitious dual-release strategy and its attempt to integrate real-life voice actresses—who formed a legitimate musical group under the same name—directly into the narrative fabric. While the experimental animation style and the blunt, sometimes polarizing, industry commentary received mixed reactions from critics and fans at the time of its release, it remains a significant example of the mid-2010s push to merge idol-culture marketing with narrative-heavy anime.
