Where it came from
Wakaokami wa Shougakusei!, known internationally as Okko's Inn, originated as a popular children's book series written by Hiroko Reijo and illustrated by Asami. The 2018 television series was produced by studio MADHOUSE, adapting the narrative of a young girl named Okko who moves to the countryside to live with her grandmother and eventually begins training to run the family's traditional Japanese inn, the Harunoya.
The adaptation process sought to capture the blend of slice-of-life storytelling and gentle supernatural elements present in the original books. Under the direction of the studio, the series was praised for its aesthetic charm and emotional depth, focusing on themes of grief, resilience, and hospitality. It is regarded as a thoughtful entry in the magical realism genre, celebrated for its character-driven approach to Okko's maturation process.
