Where it came from
Waluolan Xiao Zhen, known in English as Waluolan Town, is an original net animation series produced by the Chinese animation studio FENZ. Released during a period of significant growth for domestic Chinese 3D animation, the project sought to carve out a niche within the short-form storytelling format, focusing on whimsical aesthetics and character-driven vignettes rather than the high-octane action typical of its contemporaries.
The production utilizes FENZ's signature CGI style, characterized by stylized character models and expressive, lighthearted animation. By opting for an ONA format, the studio was able to iterate quickly on design choices, allowing the visual language of the town and its inhabitants to evolve in response to the audience's reception. The series is widely regarded as a modest but distinct entry in the studio's portfolio, valued by fans of stylized 3D shorts for its consistent art direction.
