Kaboku Kotani is starting high school, and he plans to do what he’s always done: go along with his friends, keep quiet, and not draw too much attention to himself. After all, it’s hard enough to get by with a stutter like his— why make things worse by standing out from the crowd? But then he sees another first-year, Hikari Wanda, dancing like no one is watching—or like she doesn’t care who sees her. It makes Kaboku wonder: Could he reach that same freedom? To find his way to Wanda, he does something he never thought he could: He joins the dance club. After all, every routine begins with a single step, right? Join Kaboku and Wanda as they freestyle their way to life and love!

Where it came from
Wandance is a 2025 anime television series produced by the acclaimed studio Madhouse, adapted from the manga series by Coffee. The story centers on Kaboku Kotani, a high school student who struggles with a stutter and finds an unexpected path to self-expression through dance. The series explores themes of identity, the pressure of societal expectations, and the liberation found in movement, positioning dance as a visceral alternative to verbal communication.
The production by Madhouse is noted for its ambitious approach to animating movement, a hallmark of the studio's legacy in high-fidelity character animation. The creative team aimed to capture the internal world of the protagonist, using fluid visual sequences to mirror the emotional release of dancing. Since its debut, the series has been recognized for its sensitive portrayal of neurodivergence and the artistic rigor brought to its choreographic sequences, earning it a place among contemporary works that emphasize personal growth through creative arts.
