Where it came from
Watashi no na wa Otafukuko was released in 2018 as a standalone short film produced by Studio MAPPA. It emerged during a period of creative experimentation for the studio, which sought to showcase its stylistic versatility through smaller, independent projects. The work serves as a whimsical yet grounded exploration of cultural identity and traditional folklore, reimagined through the lens of modern animation aesthetics.
The film was directed by Akiko Miyake, who aimed to evoke a sense of nostalgic warmth while updating classic Japanese visual motifs for a contemporary audience.
