The anime takes place in the "smart city" envisioned by Kyocera. In the short, people express themselves through hashtags on aerial displays. Yume, who lacks self-confidence, tries to come up with a special hashtag, known as a "rare tag." Minoru, her senior, has multiple "rare tags."

Where it came from
Watashi no Hashtag ga Haenakute is a 2023 original net animation produced by Bandai Namco Filmworks. Released in the digital landscape of modern streaming, the project emerged as a satirical and reflective commentary on the pervasive nature of social media culture, influencer aspirations, and the often ephemeral nature of online relevance in contemporary Japanese society.
The production utilized a contemporary aesthetic that mimics the vernacular of current digital trends, aiming to bridge the gap between traditional animation and the visual language of short-form video platforms. While the series functions as a standalone entertainment piece, it is widely recognized by critics as an observational work that captures the anxieties of the internet age, garnering attention for its relatable depiction of the disconnect between curated online personas and private reality.
