Watashi no Kao

Watashi no Kao, or 'My Face', is a 1990 experimental short film directed by Kon Ichikawa. Produced as part of a collaborative project featuring various directors, the film reflects Ichikawa's lifelong fascination with the intersection of cinematic technique and human expression. The work is deeply rooted in the post-war Japanese avant-garde movement, where filmmakers sought to break away from traditional narrative structures to explore the subjective experience of the individual.

The film's visual design relies on a minimalist aesthetic that strips away extraneous detail, forcing the viewer to engage directly with the shifting physiognomy of the subject. Ichikawa, known for his technical precision and subtle thematic depth, utilized close-up photography and slow-paced editing to create a meditative study of aging and identity. Upon its release, it was recognized by critics as a poignant piece of visual poetry, noted for how it utilized the medium of film to capture fleeting, intimate human moments that are often missed in larger narrative features.
