Watashi wa "Tofu" Desu

Watashi wa 'Tofu' Desu is a whimsical short film produced by NHK, primarily aimed at educational television audiences learning the Japanese language. It features the anthropomorphic Tofu character, a simple white block with a face, as he navigates daily life. The production serves as a gentle piece of media designed to introduce viewers to basic Japanese vocabulary and sentence structure through repetitive, rhythmic dialogue and clear, minimalist animation.

The character design reflects the broader aesthetic of Japanese mascot culture, or yuru-chara, which prioritizes simplicity and relatability. By focusing on a staple of the Japanese diet, the creators aimed to make the learning process accessible and culturally grounded. The short gained a cult following online due to its surreal tone and the peculiar catchiness of the Tofu character's self-introduction, distinguishing it as a memorable piece of language-learning curriculum.
