He lives his days in isolation, but finally finds a job as a writer for a shady occult magazine. After he starts his job, the weather has been rainy day after day. In a corner of the crowded and busy city, Hodaka meets a young woman named Hina. Due to certain circumstances, Hina and her younger brother live together, but have a cheerful and sturdy life. Hina also has a certain power: the power to stop the rain and clear the sky.

Where it came from
Weathering With You, released in 2019, was produced by CoMix Wave Films and written and directed by Makoto Shinkai. Following the global success of his previous feature, Your Name, Shinkai sought to capture the atmosphere of a changing climate and the isolation of modern youth in Tokyo. The project was conceived as a reflection of the anxieties surrounding the erratic weather patterns observed in Japan, framing these ecological shifts within the structure of a contemporary urban fantasy.
The film is defined by its meticulous attention to detail and hyper-realistic depiction of Tokyo's rain-drenched streets. Designed to evoke both melancholic beauty and intense emotional stakes, the visual style relied on advanced digital rendering to contrast the grey, claustrophobic cityscape with the vibrant, ethereal aesthetic of the skies above. Upon its release, the film received significant critical praise for its technical mastery and thematic ambition, eventually becoming one of the highest-grossing Japanese films of the year.
