Xi Xing Ji: Da Yuan Hun

Xi Xing Ji: Da Yuan Hun, or The Westward: The Great Yuan Soul, is a specialized ONA installment derived from the popular Chinese manhua series created by Zheng Jianhe and Deng Zhihui. Produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures, this production serves as a narrative expansion within the studio's broader adaptation of the Westward franchise, which reimagines the classic Journey to the West mythology through a dark, high-fantasy lens that emphasizes complex character motivations and stylized combat.

The visual direction for the series focuses on a blend of 3D computer animation and traditional aesthetics, aiming to capture the gritty, atmospheric tone of the original manhua. The project was developed to satisfy a growing domestic and international interest in sophisticated Chinese animation, receiving attention for its distinct departure from traditional mythological portrayals in favor of a grim, epic approach to the well-known source material.
