Xi Xing Ji: Da Yuan Hun Tebie Pian

Xi Xing Ji: Da Yuan Hun Tebie Pian, or The Westward: Great Abyss Special, emerged as part of the broader Xi Xing Ji franchise, a popular Chinese manhua series created by Zheng Jianhe and Deng Zhihui. Drawing heavily from the classic Ming dynasty novel Journey to the West, the series reimagines the traditional folklore as a dark fantasy epic, centering on a post-pilgrimage narrative where the deities have become corrupt. This special ONA (Original Net Animation) was produced to expand the lore of the animated adaptation, focusing on specific character backstories and motivations that bridge the gaps between major story arcs.

The visual design of the project remains consistent with the studio's established style, which blends high-octane 3D animation with stylized character models intended to evoke the fluid movement of comic book action sequences. The production sought to maintain the gritty aesthetic and philosophical undertones of the source material, which has been praised by audiences for its departure from traditional interpretations of the Monkey King mythos. Upon release, the special was received as a stylistic companion piece to the main series, catering specifically to viewers already immersed in the evolving power dynamics of the Xi Xing Ji universe.
