Where it came from
Xiong Bing Lian, known in English as The Black Troop, debuted in 2017 as a 3D animated series produced by the Chinese studio Transcendence Picture. Emerging from the broader Chocomecha or Super Seminary universe, the series was developed to expand upon existing lore within the studio's ambitious science fiction franchise. It shifted the narrative focus toward high-stakes military drama and superhuman tactical combat, leveraging advanced motion-capture and 3D rendering techniques to distinguish itself within the competitive landscape of domestic Chinese animation.
The visual design of the series centers on a fusion of tactical military aesthetics and futuristic, quasi-mythological power armor. By blending grounded, near-future weaponry with high-fantasy character abilities, the creators aimed to appeal to fans of both hard science fiction and action-oriented animation. Upon its release, the series was received as a significant technical advancement for the studio, frequently cited by audiences for its fluid battle choreography and its role in maturing the visual standards for 3D Chinese original net animation (ONA) productions.
