Where it came from
Yadokari is a short-form original net animation released in 2012, created by the visionary Japanese animator Kunio Katō. Known for his Academy Award-winning work on the short film La Maison en Petits Cubes, Katō produced this piece as part of a collaborative project with the Japanese rock band Quruli. The film centers on a small, whimsical creature living in a house on its back, exploring themes of travel, curiosity, and the emotional resonance of home.
The aesthetic of the film reflects Katō's signature hand-drawn, textured style, which prioritizes atmosphere and fluid, melancholic movement over high-fidelity digital rendering. Produced to accompany the song of the same name, the animation functions as a visual dialogue with the music rather than a traditional narrative piece. It was well-received within the international animation community for its minimalist storytelling and its ability to evoke complex emotional states through character design and color palette.
