Yami no Purple Eye

Yami no Purple Eye originated as a long-running manga series by Chie Shinohara, serialized beginning in the mid-1980s. The story follows Minako, a high school girl who discovers she is a descendant of an ancient race of people with feline traits and telepathic abilities. It represents a significant entry in the supernatural shojo genre, blending gothic romance with suspenseful narrative arcs that explore themes of identity and inherited destiny.

The 1996 OVA adaptation was produced by J.C.Staff, a studio that had begun carving out a reputation for atmospheric animation during that decade. The transition from manga to screen sought to capture the series' darker, more dramatic aesthetic, utilizing the stylistic tropes of 90s animation to emphasize the protagonist's internal struggle and the series' occult elements. While the OVA covers only a portion of the original source material, it remains a notable artifact of the era's experimentation with short-form adaptations of popular girl-targeted comics.
