Yasai no Yousei: N.Y. Salad The Movie

Yasai no Yousei: N.Y. Salad The Movie was released in 2010 as a feature-length expansion of the experimental short animation series created by Yoshitaka Amano. Produced by Digital Media Lab, the project maintained the signature aesthetic of Amano, a renowned artist best known for his work on the Final Fantasy franchise. The film follows the secret lives of vegetables in a New York City kitchen that come to life only when the humans are away, utilizing a distinct, watercolor-inspired 3D CGI style that mimics the textures of traditional paper and paint.

The transition from the short-form television series to the 2010 film was designed to bring Amano’s whimsical character designs to a broader narrative scope. By stripping away dialogue and focusing on ambient sound and visual storytelling, the production sought to create a meditative, atmospheric experience for the viewer. While the series had gained a cult following in Japan for its artistic integrity and departure from typical anime tropes, the film was received primarily as a niche artistic project, lauded for its technical ambition in blending classical illustration styles with contemporary digital rendering.
