Where it came from
Yayoi is an original video animation released during the late 1980s, a period defined by the rapid expansion of the direct-to-video market in Japan. This production emerged from the experimental era of the bubble economy, where studios sought to capitalize on the growing domestic demand for niche, auteur-driven animation that diverged from the constraints of mainstream television schedules.
The project reflects the distinct aesthetic sensibilities common to the era's independent OVA releases, emphasizing character-driven narratives and atmospheric visual storytelling. While the work remains a deep cut within the broader history of Japanese animation, it represents the creative freedom afforded to creators during a time when experimental projects could reach a dedicated audience without the pressure of wide theatrical distribution.
