Yi Ye Fuweng

Yi Ye Fuweng, known internationally as A Dream of Wealth, was produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio and released in 1954. It emerged during a pivotal era for Chinese animation, where the studio was actively developing a distinct aesthetic that blended traditional folk themes with sophisticated cinematic storytelling. The film serves as a cautionary fable, utilizing satirical narrative techniques to critique greed, reflecting the socio-political climate of the period through the lens of classic cultural motifs.

The film was brought to life through the studio’s signature artistic style, which drew heavily from traditional Chinese brush painting and puppetry traditions to create fluid, expressive motion. The creative team aimed to balance moral instruction with entertainment, resulting in a work that was well-received for its cultural resonance and technical proficiency. It remains a notable example of the mid-century output from a studio that significantly influenced the development of animation in East Asia.
