Yishu Xueyuan

Yishu Xueyuan, released internationally as Art College 1994, is a 2023 animated feature film directed by Liu Jian. The project was conceived as a semi-autobiographical reflection on the director’s own formative years as a student at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou during the mid-1990s. The film captures a pivotal moment of cultural transition in China, where traditional academic rigor began to intersect with the influx of Western contemporary art influences and a burgeoning youth counterculture.

The film is notable for its distinct minimalist animation style, characterized by static frames and restrained movement, which emphasizes the philosophical debates and daily ennui of its student subjects. Liu Jian collaborated with a team of artists to craft a hand-drawn aesthetic that mirrors the raw, unfiltered atmosphere of art school life. Upon its release, the film was received as a contemplative, slow-paced study of idealism and artistic identity, garnering attention on the international festival circuit, including a nomination for the Golden Bear at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival.
