The first episode adapts two bonus chapters from Mizuho Kusanagi's 12th manga volume, titled "On That Back" and "Kija." "On That Back" follows an incident at a hot spring hotel, and "Kija" depicts the past of the Hakuryuu Kija. The second two episodes adapt the rest of the Zeno Arc and were bundled with the 21st and 22nd volumes of the manga.

Where it came from
The Yona of the Dawn OVA, released in 2015 by Studio Pierrot, was created as a direct-to-video companion to the popular anime adaptation of Mizuho Kusanagi’s long-running manga series. These episodes were produced to cover the Zeno arc from the original source material, providing fans with additional narrative depth that could not be contained within the standard twenty-four-episode television run. The project served as a way to maintain momentum for the franchise while allowing the studio to adapt specific character-focused chapters that deepened the audience's understanding of the dragon warriors.
Studio Pierrot maintained the artistic consistency of the television series, focusing on the character-driven drama and sweeping fantasy aesthetics established in Kusanagi’s manga. The design work prioritized high-fantasy costume elements and the emotive, expressive character faces typical of the shojo demographic. Upon release, the OVA was well-received by the existing fan base for its faithfulness to the tone and visual language of the series, effectively bridging the gap between the primary narrative arcs and providing a polished expansion of the show's world.
