Where it came from
Yondemasu yo, Azazel-san began as a manga series by Yasuhisa Kubo in 2007 before being adapted into a series of original video animations starting in 2010. Produced by Production I.G, these episodes were released as part of a limited-edition manga bundle, reflecting a common Japanese industry practice of using short-form animation to broaden the appeal of niche comedy titles. The series leans heavily into dark humor and occult tropes, focusing on a detective who summons demons to solve mundane cases.
The character design and visual style were crafted to translate Kubo's distinct, cynical aesthetic into an animated medium, emphasizing sharp comedic timing and grotesque, yet expressive, character depictions. Upon release, the OVA was well-received within the anime community for its unapologetic absurdity and deviation from typical shonen conventions. This initial success directly paved the way for a full television series adaptation the following year, cementing its cult status among fans of transgressive comedy.
