Yumi-chan no Hikkoshi: Sayonara Tsutomu-kun

Yumi-chan no Hikkoshi: Sayonara Tsutomu-kun was produced by NHK in the early 1980s as a television special. It is a quintessential example of Japanese educational children's programming from the era, characterized by a focus on social adjustment, emotional growth, and the complexities of moving house. The narrative explores the apprehension of a young girl facing the transition to a new environment, reflecting the high value placed on empathy and resilience in youth-oriented public media.

The animation style is representative of NHK’s house aesthetic during that decade, emphasizing clean, accessible character designs that prioritize clarity and relatable storytelling. Produced within the strict guidelines of national public broadcasting, the special was designed to serve as a comforting cultural artifact for children experiencing similar life changes. It remains a recognized, if niche, title among collectors of NHK’s educational media library and is appreciated for its quiet, earnest portrayal of childhood transitions.
