Where it came from
Yurumates originated as a four-panel manga series by saxyun, first serialized in 2006. The 2009 OVA adaptation was produced by the studio Indeprox, capturing the gentle, comedic lives of young women living in a modest apartment complex while studying for university entrance exams. The animation style was intentionally kept simple and loose to mirror the relaxed, slice-of-life nature of the source material, focusing on character interactions rather than high-octane production values.
The project was designed to appeal to audiences seeking low-stakes entertainment, centering on the recurring themes of shared living and the anxieties of young adulthood in Japan. It was received as a quiet, niche entry in the comedy genre, praised for its relatable depiction of mundane daily struggles and its lighthearted approach to the 'ronin' lifestyle, which refers to students who have failed their exams and are preparing to retake them.
