Yurumates (2012)

Yurumates, released as an original video animation in 2012 by studio C2C, serves as a comedic adaptation of the four-panel manga series by creator saxyun. The story explores the humorous daily lives of ronin—students who have failed their university entrance exams—as they navigate the eccentric atmosphere of the Yuruso residence. This production highlights the lighter, slice-of-life trend common in mid-2010s Japanese animation, focusing on low-stakes social dynamics and the irony of characters who are technically studying but rarely academic.

The animation design by C2C emphasizes a simple, clean aesthetic that mirrors the source material's minimalist four-panel structure. By distilling the comedic timing of the original print strips into a concise animated format, the studio aimed to capture the relatable anxiety and idle humor of the characters' shared housing situation. Upon its release, the series was received as a niche, lighthearted entry in the 'daily life' genre, appreciated primarily by fans of character-driven comedy and those familiar with the specific cultural archetype of the university-bound ronin.
