Where it came from
The Zenshu series was produced by Studio MAPPA and released in 2025 as a dedicated exploration of animation history and the creative process. Developed as a passion project by director Mitsuo Iso, the series was designed to serve as a love letter to the medium, focusing on the rigorous life of an animator and the nostalgic weight of the craft. It stands out in the studio's modern catalog for its grounded, character-driven narrative, which contrasts with the high-octane action sequences typically associated with MAPPA’s recent commercial slate.
The series centers on a protagonist who attempts to revive a long-dormant anime project, reflecting real-world themes of artistic burnout and the evolution of production techniques. Mitsuo Iso brought his signature meticulous attention to detail to the series, aiming for a visual style that captures both the technical complexities of hand-drawn animation and the emotional interiority of those who create it. Upon its debut, it was recognized by critics as a poignant meta-commentary on the anime industry, lauded for its sincerity and its unique positioning as an educational yet narrative-focused work.
